I am not an expert on the game of ice hockey. I figure that is more a Canadian thing and it seems sort of odd that they have ice hockey down here in North Carolina. Of course we have always had amateur hockey and I have always been struck by how much better the game is in person. It just is not a game that seems as well suited to TV as football and basketball is. I have been looking at the NHL expert picks and trying to figure out what they think about the Hurricanes and their chances to make the Stanley Cup playoffs this year. I have been wondering how much of the problems we had last year are correctable. Of course injuries were a huge factor, but you do not get to use that for an excuse really. It is a very long season and you have to expect that you will get guys hurt and the element of luck is all that can help you when it comes to that.
You can only go so far as your goal keeper takes you in hockey and that is one place that the Canes are pretty strong in the past. You like their chances when you have a hall of fame type goalie, but now the Canes have to rely on guys who have not done a great job. Unless that changes and changes a whole lot it is hard to see how things can get a lot better in the short term. It is pretty much that simple. The other team can not beat you if they can not score and you can not beat them unless your goal keeper is able to shut the other team down. At least he has to be better than the other goalie.
